Cataract Gorge

Cataract Gorge Reserve, aka The Gorge, is a river gorge in Launceston, and one of the regions most popular attractions.

The Gorge is a two minute drive from Launceston or a 15 minute walk along the banks of the Tamar River.

Along the north bank of the Gorge runs a pathway known as the Kings Bridge-Cataract Walk. Originally built in the 1890s by a group of volunteers, it was the only bridge leading north out of the city for nearly 100 years.

There is also the option of crossing the Gorge by chairlift, the longest single span chairlift in the world of of 457m.

There is a swimming pool and an open area surrounded by bushland at the First Basin on the southern side. At the lower end of the Gorge, the South Esk runs under Kings Bridge on the way to the Tamar River.

Along with the swimming pool, there is also a kiosk, restaurant, rolling lawns and a rotunda, peacocks in the trees and wallabies at dusk.
