Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site

Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site

The Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site, situated on the corner of Brisbane and Campbell Streets in Hobart, Tasmania, was built in the early 1830s, according to the design of Colonial Architect and Civil Engineer John Lee Archer.

The Penitentiary Chapel complex today allows us a fascinating glimpse into Colonial Tasmania. A beautiful 1834 tower with the two courtrooms remaining virtually unchanged for over 145 years, and the gaol chapel restored to display John Lee Archers original design.

Cocktail parties along with special ghost tours can be organised to make your next event both jovial and chilling. The ghost tours take you through tunnels, cells and the still-standing gallows.
