The Beatles: Get Back

The Beatles: Get Back

Documentary about the music group The Beatles featuring in-studio footage that was shot in early 1969 for the 1970 feature film 'Let It Be.'

Acclaimed filmmaker Peter Jackson's "The Beatles: Get Back" is a unique cinematic experience that takes audiences back in time to The Beatles' intimate recording sessions during a pivotal moment in music history.

The film showcases the warmth, camaraderie and creative genius that defined the legacy of the iconic foursome.

Shot in January 1969 and compiled from over 60 hours of unseen footage (filmed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg) and more than 150 hours of unheard audio, all of which has been brilliantly restored, "The Beatles: Get Back" is the story of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr as they plan their first live show in over two years and charts the writing and rehearsing of 14 new songs, originally intended for release on an accompanying live album.

The film features - for the first time in its entirety - The Beatles' last live performance as a group, the unforgettable rooftop concert on London's Savile Row as well as other songs and classic compositions featured on the band's final two albums, Abbey Road and Let It Be.

An exciting new collaboration between The Beatles and three-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson ("The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "They Shall Not Grow Old") presented by The Walt Disney Studios in association with Apple Corps Ltd. and WingNut Films Productions Ltd., "The Beatles: Get Back" is directed by Jackson, produced by Jackson, Clare Olssen ("They Shall Not Grow Old") and Jonathan Clyde ("Eight Days A Week"), with Ken Kamins ("The Hobbit" trilogy) and Apple Corps' Jeff Jones ("Eight Days A Week") serving as executive producers. Jabez Olssen ("Rogue One: A Star Wars Story") serves as the film's editor, and the music is mixed by Giles Martin ("Rocketman") and Sam Okell ("Yesterday").

REVIEW

Melbourne
Wednesday 24th November 2021.

My son (19) and I were foruntate to be invited to the exclusive Australian premiere of Get Back by Disney Australia held at the Rivoli Cinema in Camberwell (Melbourne Victoria).

We were told we would see exclusive footage hosted by Peter Jackson (on screen of course). It opened with an introduction by Peter Jackson explaining what we were about to see and some background to the history, process and timescale. The first was from a visual perspective, that technology was able to turn a grainy image into what we were about to see. The screen slowly got bigger and bigger, and sharper and WOW!.. the audience stood, clapped and cheered. We watched as 1969 turned into 2021. Then he repeated it with the sound. From noisy, low quality sound to crisp, deep sound that we are all used to and yes, another round of applause.

While we maybe talking Beatle fans here, the audience was a mixture of old and new. Everyone loved it. The vibe as we left the cinema was elation.

Get Back turns back the hands of time and opens our eyes to the world of The Beatles. Day to day sessions, pots of tea, late nights, early mornings, laughter, tears, discussion, behind the scenes that we never got to see. The comadre between everyone, Yoko's involvement, busy sessions, how tracks developed, humour behind the process.

It was facsinating to watch, learn and savour. It did not disappoint, I mentioned my son for a reason. At 19, Beatlemania is but a word. He enjoyed it as much as I did. I lived the Beatles for most of my teenage years from a fan to a wannabee musician. I watched in trepidation that I might be disappointed. I was not, far from it, it was a journey back to my childhood and discovering The Beatles that I never knew. It answers many questions that had largely never been answered. It showed a new and unusual side to each of them including freinds, technicans and crew.

Non Beatle fans: will you like it? With an open mind and an interest in history, yes. It's a marvellous insight into a day in the life of the world's most famous band.
