AFS Tasmania

AFS Tasmania

AFS is a human rights focussed international, voluntary, non-governmental and non-profit organisation aimed at providing inter-cultural learning opportunities to people to help create a more just and peaceful world.

AFS members aim to enable people to act as responsible global citizens working for peace and understanding in a diverse world.

We seek to affirm faith in the dignity and worth of every human being and of all nations and cultures, and to encourage respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms without the distinctions of race, sex, language, religion or social status.

AFS activities are based on our core values of dignity, respect for differences, harmony, sensitivity and tolerance.

Tasmania has four AFS local groups, running programs in Devonport, Hobart, Launceston and Tamar Valley. The programs include:

The groups work together to run three camps each year, providing preparation for departing students, induction and support for hosted students and a debrief for returned students.

Most of all, the camps provide a great social occasion for an extraordinary group of young people from many countries of the world.

The four local groups provide most Tasmanians with easy access to a local group. The best way to learn about AFS is to come along to a monthly meeting of the local group and listen to the stories of the people who are participating in AFS as a volunteer or a participant.

You will hear wonderful stories of the international friendships that people have experienced and relationships with host families that are almost as strong and generous as the relationships in a natural family.

For many people, an AFS experience is just the start - it is a powerful education experience, which stays with them for the rest of their lives.

There are many ways to become involved with AFS in Tasmania. Work as volunteer, within the local group, host a student or community service volunteer, or go overseas on an AFS Program.

Our aim at AFS TAS is to have more people involved, each doing less work and having more fun, enjoying the international friendships that AFS provides.

Come along to a group meeting - you will be welcome and wont be sorry! Visit the AFS website via the link below for more information and your closest AFS group location.
