Blackmans Bay Mother named Mother of the Year
Bernadette Black, of Blackmans Bay, Tasmania, has been nominated Barnardos Australias Mother of the Year 2009.
Black unexpectedly fell pregnant at age 16, and promised herself there things: to be a good mum, finish her education and write a book encouraging other young mothers.
16 years later, it seems she has completed all three goals, and has been nationally recognised for the achievement into the bargain.
She has become an inspirational voice to many, making regular appearances at the local schools and community events to speak and provide advice on teenage and unexpected pregnancy.
"When I fell pregnant I desperately searched for support and inspiration from others who had been in my situation, but found none,"Black said.
"So I wrote the book to show others that through perseverance and determination you can overcome lifes challenges and fulfill your dreams."
Black was nominated by her 15-year-old son, Damien Oliver-Black.
"Its like she has a flame inside her that burns and burns to help people,"he said of his mum.
"But she also always has time for her own kids and makes us all feel very special - and she makes great chocolate chip cookies!"
Ms Black, of Blackmans Bay, Tasmania, has another son, aged four and a seven-year-old daughter.
