Working It Out (WIO) is a Tasmanian community based organisation aimed at supporting the interests of people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex (LGBTI).
WIO arose from a 1998 report into the suicide deaths of several young gay men on the North-West coast of Tasmania. This study recognised the impact of negative social attitudes towards difference and the increased incidence of suicide and self-harming behaviours of sexual minority youth.
From smaller beginnings - with one part-time worker - WIO now has a worker in three regions, based in Burnie, Launceston and Hobart, along with a state-wide coordinator. WIOs mission continues in supporting individuals and groups while also providing education and training to organisations.
WIO was initially funded by the Commonwealth Government through the National Suicide Prevention Strategy. This howe'ver was limited funding and when it did run out the State Government stepped in to enable WIO to continue providing services for LGBTI Tasmanians.
Today, WIO provides an integrated, three-level support service for LGBTI people, offering free and confidential support, resources and information for individuals and couples around issues relating to sexuality and gender.
WIO offers in-service education and professional development to health and other service providers, along with community education and awareness raising workshops. Their third area of focus is on peer based support programs and involvement in community development projects and cultural events.
Working It Out is committed to:
Creating environments through support, education, and community development that encourage LGBTI people and communities to reach their full potential
Fostering respect, understanding and tolerance within the Tasmanian community
Recognising the right to express ones sexuality without fear and discrimination.
